Materials
Paton’s Classic Merino (3½ oz / 223 yds) 100% Merino Wool, 1 ball, (I used the colour “Peacock”) *or any other worsted weight yarn
US Size 8 / 5mm needle
Gauge
Not really that important
Abbreviations
yfwd bring yarn forward, and when knitting the next stitch, you’ll create a yarn over in the process
SKP slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch (not the YO) over knit stitch
yfrn bring yarn forward, wrap around RHN needle (up and over) and back to the front (creates 2 “stitches”)
Directions
CO 16
Knit 4 rows of seed stitch (you could also do garter stitch)
Keep the first and last 3 sts seed stitch (again, you could substitute garter stitch)
The following is for the eyelet insert:
Row 1 k2, k2tog, yfwd, k2tog but leave on LHN, k into first st again and slip both off LHN, yfwd, SKP, k2
Row 2 purl
Row 3 k1, k2tog, yfwd, k4, yfwd, SKP, k1
Row 4 purl
Row 5 k2tog, yfwd, k1, k2tog, yfrn, SKP, k1, yfwd, SKP
Row 6 p4, k1 (do not let the next “stitch” fall off, you’ll be purling it!), p5
Row 7 k2, yfwd, SKP, k2, k2tog, yfwd, k2
Row 8 purl
Row 9 k3, yfwd, SKP, k2tog, yfwd, k3
Row 10 purl
Repeat these 10 rows until desired length (mine was 8 repeats in total)
Knit 1 row of seed stitch
Knit a row of seed stitch as follows:
– knit 3 sts of seed stitch, yo, k2tog or p2tog (in keeping with seed stitch), seed stitch 3 sts, yo, k2tog or p2tog, seed stitch 2 sts, yo, seed stitch to end
Knit 1 or 2 more rows of seed stitch
Bind off, in a seed stitch manner (this will make the bind off stitches sit straight on top).
